Which PGT Models This Applies To

The WinGuard hinged and sliding units use a proprietary 2-point or 3-point multipoint lock chassis that differs from standard Schlage or Hoppe hardware by bolt spacing; measure center-to-center on the faceplate before ordering any replacement. PremierVue vinyl sliders run on a tandem roller system with a 1-1/4 inch or 1-1/2 inch wheel diameter depending on production year, and the roller housing geometry changed in 2019 - earlier units use a flat-mount bracket, later ones an angled bracket that won’t interchange.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

• The sweep drags or catches on the threshold. On PGT sliders, the adjustable sweep wears a groove into the vinyl fin first; on hinged units, the door-bottom sweep compresses and loses its memory. Either way, you’re seeing daylight under the door before you feel the draft.
• Multipoint lock bolts don’t throw or retract smoothly. The PGT multipoint chassis uses a central gearbox with elongated deadbolts; salt air in Sunrise corrodes the internal zinc linkage, and the bolts start to rack in their keeps. Force the handle and you’ll twist the spindle or crack the escutcheon.
• Visible moisture or staining at the jamb corners. In Broward County’s driving rain pattern, failed frame bedding or degraded backer rod lets water track behind the fin. On stucco homes in Sunrise, this shows as efflorescence or paint bubbling first; on frame construction, you see the stain on the interior baseboard.
• Roller noise or panel jump on sliding units. The tandem rollers in PGT sliders carry 80 to 120 pounds per panel; when the bearings go, the panel drops and the anti-lift blocks no longer engage properly. You’ll feel it as a thump when you slide, and the panel may lift out of track if you force it.
• Daylight visible around the frame perimeter. PGT’s compression weatherstrip is EPDM or silicone depending on series; Florida UV degrades it in 7 to 10 years. Once the bulb cracks, the design pressure rating of an impact unit is compromised - the glass may survive a storm, but the water won’t stay out.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s safe checking, and then there’s work that belongs to a crew with the right tools.

What you can do: photograph the manufacturing label, check the sweep for visible wear, and operate the multipoint lock while watching whether all bolts move together. If one lags, note which one. You can also check the threshold screws - on PGT units, they’re typically #10 x 2-1/2 inch stainless - to see if they’ve backed out and dropped the panel.

Where DIY goes wrong: adjusting or replacing a multipoint lock chassis requires releasing the hinge side preload first; do it in the wrong order and the door racks in the frame, destroying the weatherstrip seal. Impact-rated units are heavy - a 3/0 x 6/8 WinGuard hinged door runs 180 to 220 pounds - and the anti-lift hinges are under spring tension. We’ve replaced units in Sunrise where a homeowner removed the hinge pin without supporting the panel, and the corner of the door cut the jamb. We don’t recommend that path.
